puppy socialization
A puppy’s socialization period is form 3-12 weeks. This period is thought to be the most crucial time of your dog’s entire life. Therefore, it is very important to capitalize on the puppy socialization period.
Proper socialization starts even before you get your puppy. If purchasing your puppy you should visit breeders even before deciding on a puppy. Your potential puppy should be kept inside a home rather than outside or in a barn or shed. He or she should be exposed to everyday noises and various types of people (kids, men with facial hair, elderly, etc). When visiting your puppy it is also recommended that you meet his or her parents. Both parents and puppies should run willingly towards you for attention. In one study, it was found that fear and aggression was 80% inheritable. Our certified pet dog trainers recommend your puppy being purchased at 8 weeks or age. We do not recommend your puppy being purchased at 7 weeks of age or younger. On the other hand, if your puppy is too old upon purchase you will not have control over any of this critical period. If you decide to adopt your puppy the same care should be given towards puppy socialization once adoption occurs.
Upon purchase or adoption of your puppy, we recommend lots of proper puppy socialization. This socialization should be done with an experienced certified pet dog trainer, as this period is so crucial. Our certified pet dog trainers can help guide you through this process in any of our programs. It is important that you as an owner be instructed on what to look for, as signals of fear and stress are very subtle at this age. As dogs become older they become more neophobic so fear and aggression tend to get worse with age.
