Brody’s Story – All-Inclusive Training Program

Brody

Brody

Dear Canine Curriculum,

Thank you so much for your help with Brody.  We loved your suggestion of the All-Inclusive Training Program.  We felt like he was making progress on just a weekly basis but we saw a greater turn around after your work with him. We are a busy household and felt like we were not consistent in our training which was not helping him be successful.  We felt after your hour visits working daily with him on sit, stay, come, down, place, wait, and leash walking he was more successful.  We thought his progress had increased tremendously.  You did a great job fine tuning his commands and we were able to maintain what he learned.  This is a great program for anyone with a new dog and for the fact you do not have to take him anywhere, he is learning in his own environment where he needs to know what is expected.  We think this helped not only him but us as owners because your follow up with us was great.  Brody has turned out to be a great member of our family and we have you to thank for that.

Sincerely,

The Grays

Rascal’s Story – Dog Private Training

Rascal

Rascal

We have a Shorkie (Shih-tzu/Yorkie mix) who just turned a year old. His name is Racal, and there’s never been a more suited name for a puppy! Rascal is indeed a rascal.

Rascal is our first dog, so we were really novices when it came to raising one. We adopted him when he was 3 months old, and for the first several months we were pretty clueless as to how to modify some of his behaviors. We did a beginner class at a local pet supply store, and that was pretty effective for some of the basics like sit, down and leave it. But Rascal is a pretty strong-willed little guy, and we continued to struggle with our two most important issues…housebreaking and getting him to come when called consistently.

During one of my many (and by that I mean a hundred or so) internet searches for puppy training tips, I landed on the link to Canine Curriculum. What a blessing that turned out to be! For one thing, the website was well designed and easy to use. I called right away and talked to Sean about the issues we were having with Rascal, as well as our best options for successful training outcomes. Together we selected the in-home training option, primarily since housebreaking is much more successful when conducted in the puppy’s own environment. We set up an appointment only a few days away, and I immediately felt like help was on its way.

Kristyn came to the house and did a thorough analysis of our training styles and skills, as well as Rascal’s current situation. We determined that he was about 70% trained at that time and really just needed that final push to get him to go consistently and exclusively outside. She helped us to understand that he needed to know that outside wasn’t just one option…it was the only option. The biggest aha for us was recognizing that we were doing the work for him by taking him out on a regular schedule. What we needed to do instead was force him to make the decision as to when he needed to go so that we could help him make the right decision as to where to go. Within a couple of weeks of Kristyn’s visit, Rascal was going to the door and either scratching or barking to be let out. No more accidents in the house!

We had Kristyn come back for a follow-up visit to work on coming when called…consistently. Rascal has a mind of his own, and he likes to decide if he wants to come or not. Kristyn worked with us extensively on that command and gave us an action plan for working with him on our own. She made recommendations that we never would have come to on our own. And because she was familiar with Rascal and his little personality, it’s really been effective.

Kristyn does a great job of training. She’s very talented, professional, personable and practical. I would recommend Canine Curriculum to anyone who’s trying to train a puppy quickly and successfully.

Charlie and Barclay’s Story

Barclay and Charlie

Barclay and Charlie

Our dogs, Barclay and Charlie, were the victims of over-indulgent human parents. It started off innocently enough – we liked to sit with them on the furniture, share food with them and our “commands” were merely suggestions. It was easy to spoil them because they are relatively small – Barclay is a Chihuahua and Charlie is a Rat Terrier – and so even their worst behavior didn’t have a big impact. Nevertheless, Barclay was very aggressive – no one could walk near either of us when he was around without him attempting to bite – and Charlie would jump on guests and generally do whatever she wanted, in that charming terrier sort of way. Both dogs would seem to “lose their minds” when strangers came to the door or they spotted other dogs while on walks or while riding in the car. While we were often annoyed by their behavior, the need to change it became critical when Deanna’s sister and newborn baby moved in. We just couldn’t risk the baby getting injured and giving the dogs up wasn’t even a consideration.

That’s when we hired Canine Curriculum and sent the dogs to the 21-day boarded training – or “Rehab” as we call it. When they returned home, the difference was like night and day. Both dogs were much calmer; Barclay no longer trembled with nervous energy. And, needless to say, both were extremely responsive to Shawn’s commands. To be truthful, it took me awhile to fully accept the changes I needed to make in my own behavior in order to support them and cement their learning. Shawn made this easy, though, by patiently explaining the rationale behind everything and making slight adjustments when possible to accommodate us without sacrificing the training. The main motivation for us to change, though, came in the following days as we saw just how more relaxed and happy the two dogs were – we simply just didn’t want our self-indulgence to negatively impact them anymore. There was no more insanity when a stranger dared to darken our door; while they reacted by barking, they quickly retreated to their “place” on our command and remained there until they were released. Now, even when we’re on walks, they barely even notice other dogs, let alone react like rabid mongrels! And that makes life more enjoyable for all of us.

Importantly, we no longer have any concerns about how the dogs will react to the baby. Our pack has been restructured and they now know that they rank below all the humans in the house, no matter how small. And since there is no confusion about this very basic canine principle, everything else is easy. We still enjoy our dogs – just differently. We now enjoy working with them and get to experience their obvious joy in pleasing us – they really are show-offs!

We highly recommend Canine Curriculum because of their devotion to positive reinforcement and the impact adherence to this principle has had on the emotional outlook of our dogs – and our outlook as well. There is simply no negativity in this method – you will never use “No!” or “Bad dog!” or any other negative command again. Positive reinforcement will be the only thing your dog associates with your voice. If you have ever tried any other training method, you will quickly recognize the difference this positive energy makes between you and your pets. They will feel good and so will you. And you will know that this is the best investment you have ever made.

Buck’s Story

Buck

I was at the end of my rope, desperate to find an answer to Buck’s behavioral issues. My husband and I knew that boxer puppies needed attention and care, but at 7 months old, Buck was showing signs of more than simple puppy energy. While searching the internet I entered “K-9 trainer, separation anxiety, Kansas City.” I found Canine Curriculum and read about Sean and Kristyn, and their positive training methods and their board and train program. Immediately I felt this was the solution for Buck. After discussing the program with my husband, I called for more information about Sean and Kristyn’s techniques of positive training to get a sense of what could be done about Buck’s separation anxiety. Kristyn was incredibly helpful and explained their plan for addressing Buck’s behavioral issues as well as his basic obedience training.

The difference in Buck’s behavior is incredible. He is calm and confident and his obedience is amazing. Buck loves Sean and really is motivated to please him. It is apparent that Sean and Kristyn care about animals and have a real passion for their well-being. Any time we have had questions Sean and Kristyn have been more than willing to advise us on how to address our concerns. Although Buck may never be happy to be alone, we now have the tools to help Buck cope when we are away.

We left Buck a nervous, anxious puppy and Sean returned him a well-balanced, confident dog. This program works, and has made our lives, and Buck’s life, much more enjoyable.

Barney’s Story – Private Dog Training

Barney

Barney

My husband and I contacted Canine Curriculum desperately in search of a ‘game changer.’ Our 2 ½ year old Basset Hound, Barney, had become aggressive towards us and was constantly barking at us for attention. We had already worked with another behavioral specialist, but did not get the results we had hoped for. When the specialist suggested doggie Prozac, we began to research other options.

From the very first time I spoke to Kristyn, I felt a sense of hopefulness that I had not felt for a long time. Although she determined he had resource guarding and dominance issues, I no longer had a fear of being forced to give Barney back to his rescue group. She reassured me that through pack restructure and the proper training, Barney could be helped. Without hesitation, I signed him up for in home training.

Within the first 10 minutes of our initial training session, I had already learned more about Barney’s behavioral issues than I did from all of the other experts. She was highly knowledgeable and passionate about her work and truly wanted what was best for our family. She was always prepared for our training sessions and patient with me and my thousands of questions. One of the best things about Canine Curriculum is that your training doesn’t stop when she leaves your house. On several occasions, I found myself calling her to discuss an issue that had occurred or to clarify a training technique. It didn’t matter if it was late in the evening or over a weekend, Kristyn always called back promptly and was eager to help.

Our training lasted about 3 months. At first, it was frustrating and required a ton of work, but I can honestly say that all of the extra effort and time we spent with Kristyn was well worth it. Two weeks ago, Barney graduated from his training. He is practically a whole new dog. I can’t remember the last aggressive incident we had and his excessive barking for attention is long gone. He went from an unpredictable, dominance seeking, “genetically challenged” Basset to a well mannered and obedient dog. The change in Barney was so remarkable, even our friends and neighbors were amazed!

Kristyn is certainly the ‘game changer’ we were searching for. She is not only a phenomenal trainer, but a great person, too. We cannot begin to thank Kristyn enough for all of her hard work, dedication and patience. She finally helped us achieve the results we were looking for!

Mac’s Story

Mac

Mac

Dear Kristyn and Sean,

A dog is man’s best friend and Mac, our Bearded Collie, is my great buddy. Canine Curriculum helped civilize Mac, teaching (sit, stay, down, wait, don’t bite, etc.).
Mac was a dream companion for my visiting 14-month-old grandson. There was no nibbling on his soft skin. No barking. He was able to use Mac for a walking companion. It was a great relationship.
My home has oriental carpets. I was concerned with toilet training. Canine Curriculum made the whole experience an easy learn. We have had no accidents in 6 months.
Kindness and rewards bring out the best in people and dogs. This is the training method that works best…positive reinforcement. Canine Curriculum is a great training program. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Marti and Patrick Mcclarney

Otis’s Story – Private Dog Training

Otis

Otis

November 9, 2007

To Whom It May Concern,

I write this letter on behalf of Sean Savage, with whom my husband and I became acquainted approximately one year ago.

We bought a German Shepherd puppy in September of 2006, and we asked our veterinarian, Dr. Jim Sparks, to refer us to whom he felt was the best resource for training our new puppy, Otis. Without hesitation, he recommended Sean’s company, Canine Curriculum, and we immediately contacted him to begin training. Though we had had German Shepherds before, they were never professionally trained. We loved our Shepherds, but there were behavioral issues that occurred, no doubt, because of their lack of training. We wanted no such mistakes with Otis, so we were excited to begin the work with Sean.

It was obvious how knowledgeable Sean was about the breed, behavior and training, and from the beginning, he commanded Otis’s attention, respect and obedience. Otis was a quick study and the results were amazing and surprisingly quick. What was also apparent was that originally, Otis responded to Sean, but not to us-..or at least, not with the same optimum results…. thus OUR training began. He fully instructed us on his knowledge of the breed, how they think and their behavioral tendencies. With Sean’s tutelage, we set goals for desired behaviors and he commenced teaching us exercises and training in which to achieve them. And, if Otis exhibited a problematic behavior, Sean developed a correction and methodology to alter that behavior to our satisfaction.

We are convinced that it is because of Sean’s expertise and knowledge that we have had such results. And, we cannot express how much of a difference it has made in our lives at home and the relationship we have with our dog.

Sincerely,

Patrice Jobe
